About Gateway Community Services

Gateway Community Services has been helping people in Jacksonville and Northeast Florida with drug and alcohol addiction treatment since 1978. The nonprofit offers several types of care, including detoxification, residential treatment, outpatient programs, and ongoing recovery support for adults and adolescents.

They partnered with Oyova to address accessibility issues across its website, making important information easier for visitors to access without changing the site’s overall design.

Objectives

Gateway’s website needed accessibility improvements, but a redesign wasn’t part of the plan. Oyova focused on finding and fixing issues across the site, then verifying the changes worked.

Client Goals

  • Review the website for ADA accessibility issues.
  • Identify and fix barriers affecting accessibility.
  • Improve usability while preserving Gateway’s existing design and branding.
  • Retest the affected areas to confirm that the updates worked as expected.

Challenges Faced

Because several pages used the same design elements, certain accessibility issues appeared repeatedly throughout the website.

A large portion of the findings involved color contrast, particularly with text, buttons, and navigation links. Some of these changes also needed to be made carefully to maintain Gateway’s existing branding.

Solution

Oyova reviewed Gateway’s website, documented the accessibility issues, and worked through the necessary fixes.

We grouped repeated findings together to identify issues that could be resolved across multiple pages with a single change.

Development Process

Our team updated text colors, buttons, links, and other website elements to improve contrast and readability.

We also reviewed navigation and interactive elements for accessibility issues and made adjustments where needed.

After making the changes, we tested the affected areas to check that the fixes worked as expected.

Results

Updates to shared website styles and components addressed recurring accessibility issues across multiple pages. Improvements to text contrast, buttons, and navigation elements helped make the content more readable and easier to browse.

The changes improved text readability and helped make the website easier to use while keeping Gateway’s existing design and branding intact.
